Ferrari Enzo versus Ferrari LaFerrari

When observing the last few decades, it is clear that the supercar market witnessed many changes over time. Many newcomers failed after producing a car or two. Some failed at the conception stage without even making a single production car.

Big names like Lamborghini went bust to be resurrected by the Audi. Lancia won the World Rally Championship more than any other automotive manufacturer and produced excellent but bonkers cars like the Lancia Stratos which went on to win 81 international rally events, followed by the Lancia 037 Rallye, the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the World rally championship. Lancia was world-renowned for its performance car business and now they are only making a small miserable-looking hatchback. Alfa Romeo doesn’t produce supercars anymore, and their last supercar the 8C largely left an impression on the supercar world.

Only Ferrari could achieve unparallel success in both sales and motorsport success. Ferrari with its unparalleled motorsport pedigree and successful road cars makes them probably the most desired and most respected sports car manufacturer of all time.

Ferrari F40 and Ferrari F50 were hypercars in every sense of speaking. Ferrari enthusiasts always kept looking forward to seeing worthy successors with 21st-century styling and performance.

This is where the Ferrari Enzo and Ferrari LaFerrari come in. Ferrari Enzo has been around for more than a decade and still, it is capable of outperforming most of the modern-day supercars.

Ferrari Enzo is one of the best Ferrari supercars of all time and is approached by the enthusiasts with a certain reverence, as befits a car named after the memory of Enzo Ferrari himself, and due to the same reason, it had a lot to live up to.

Following the footsteps of the Ferrari F40 and Ferrari F50, Ferrari Enzo also had a minimalist interior.

Carbon fiber was excessively used to furnish the cabin, and only the essential equipment was available to save weight.

The steering wheel featured a row of small round buttons to perform different functionalities, just like the steering wheel of a Formula One car.

Ferrari La Ferrari on the other hand had a body shape made out of complex curves, aerodynamic tweaks, and scoops. Ferrari Enzo sort of looks like an old Mig 31 and the Ferrari La Ferrari is the modern-day equivalent of the T50 or F35.

Ferrari Enzo’s interior was considered hollow and lonely by many Ferrari enthusiasts due to its absence of creature comforts, expensive leather trimming, and electronic equipment such as satellite navigation.

Ferrari LaFerrari’s interior was way better than the one in Ferrari Enzo in every possible way. But, still, it also features the exposed welding, exposed fixing, and visible wiring, the very things that have always played a massive role in making the driver feel that the Ferrari Enzo was unfinished or completed in a hurry. Ferrari was always known for their attention to detail, and in their other cars, the interior was lavish, luxurious, and elegant. All the other Ferrari supercars at the time featured extensive yet expensive leather trimming, comfortable seats, and a better-equipped interior. Ferrari LaFerrari on the other hand featured a fixed seat fitting that requires some time to get used to. Since the driver cannot adjust the seating position, he/she could adjust the steering and the pedals towards them.

Ferrari Enzo was known for its unforgettable and unbearable sound of the howling of the engine, especially when cold starting the vehicle. It also featured a speedometer that registered 20 or sometimes 30km/h than the actual speed that you are traveling. The lackluster interior and its bold appearance were heavily criticized by the Ferrari enthusiasts.

Ferrari LaFerrari when compared to Ferrari Enzo, offered a more refined and comfortable ride. Despite the fixed seating position and adjustable steering and pedals, the driving experience was more comfortable since better soundproofing and insulation methodologies were used when constructing the vehicle. When the Ferrari LaFerrari comes to life, there’s no way of denying that there’s a potent powerplant behind your back, but it is not that harsh to live with when compared to the Ferrari Enzo experience.

Despite the improvements, Ferrari LaFerrari also followed the same footsteps of the Ferrari Enzo and featured an unfurnished interior. Only the most basic instruments were available for driver’s usage. However, since the propulsion is creamier and easier to live with when compared to the savage acceleration and engine noise of the Ferrari Enzo.

Ferrari LaFerrari had a smoother and more decisive double-clutch transmission and more calm and responsive steering.

Ferrari LaFerrari also features a more tuned-up suspension system, and the damping system is more sophisticated and provides you a better ride quality. More importantly, LaFerrari filters out the unwanted bits of the supercar experience and provides all the necessary bits in magnitudes, such as the way the suspension is working and no frustration due to electronic driver’s aid.

Due to these advantages, it is easier to get used to the Ferrari LaFerrari, for it feels more relaxing to drive and it feels less savage.

Since Ferrari Enzo and Ferrari LaFerrari are hypercars, they require minimal steering lock, but due to the speed that you can commit to driving, the driver must have maximum confidence in himself/herself for what the front end and the rear end of the car are doing.

Ferrari Enzo features a very responsive front, light steering, and a slightly edgy tail. Many complain that it feels like the front and tail never felt completely connected to each other. Due to this, the driver must learn to trust it, but he/she will barely feel totally relaxed.

Ferrari LaFerrari provides a much calmer steering and a closer bond between the front end and the rear end of the car, and due to this, the LaFerrari feels more composed. The steering wheel also provides a slightly increased rate of response, then in few milliseconds steering lock restores the liner response.

Ferrari LaFerrari offered braking power which is not that liner when taking various kinds of corners. Many Ferrari experts point out that brake applying in a lighter manner there’s a little hint of dead travel, then the brake pads seem to slightly touch the discs rather than squeezing them, but just like the non-linear response in steering that goes away in a matter of milliseconds, the braking is also replaced with consistent, more intuitive and immense power, which doesn’t quite match the savage braking power of the Ferrari Enzo.

Ferrari LaFerrari features regenerative braking for the maximum efficiency of the hybrid system, and this might be related to regenerative retardation which is more common in hybrid power trains with regenerative braking.

Ferrari LaFerrari is packed with 950 horsepower. To deliver that sort of power, a traditional V12 Ferrari engine combined with electric motors. Power to the electric motors is provided with the help of battery packs.

However, this hybrid system is very different from the hybrid systems in McLaren P1, and the Porsche 918 Spyder.

The impossibly fast acceleration is due to the way the hybrid system performs. Ferrari LaFerrari is a very easy car to control and to drive fast. The V12 engine also offers an extraordinary revving range, so the driver doesn’t have to rely on the low and mid-range punch, so alternatively the driver could work within the generous band of propulsion, rather than using the gears.

Performance-wise, comfort-wise, ride-wise, the Ferrari Enzo cannot come closer to the Ferrari LaFerrari. However, in terms of acceleration, grip, pace, bold looks, Ferrari Enzo comes closer to the Ferrari LaFerrari.

Though Ferrari Enzo packed a big amount of power, it wasn’t easy to manage or felt as it was less accessible. To get the best out of Ferrari Enzo, the driver had to be the best of the best, and it took some time to get used to the Ferrari Enzo as well.

Ferrari Enzo may look crude and savage when compared to the nowadays supercars and hypercars, mainly due to the lack of advanced electronics and driver aids. However, Ferrari Enzo undoubtedly still remains a spectacular experience. The savage, unrefined nature of its power delivery, unforgiving nature for those who aren’t capable enough or won’t commit was sort of intoxicating for many. The less adaptability to lose surface and weather conditions somehow made it harder to get the maximum out of it. When the roads are dry and smoother, it was a completely different experience, and the confident enough driver went on to seize the day, to make the moments behind its wheel are unique.

Ferrari LaFerrari, much like the Ferrari Enzo, has too much power and performance to deploy on the track and road. Despite the advances in suspension setup and electronic driver aids, the driver always had to remind herself/himself that they are unleashing 950 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari LaFerrari got 300 horsepower more and 180 lb-ft of more torque.

The most interesting fact is the refinement, quality, and measured tactility that’s been engineered into this car which relies heavily on electronics. The electronic driver aids make the suspension, the transmission, and the power train more interconnected to provide more refined ride quality and a more intuitive driving experience.

Ferrari LaFerrari chassis is considered as more malleable, yet the driver feels that he/she is more connected to the process. Ferrari LaFerrari being a car completely dedicated to speed and handling is probably the most complete supercar ever made.

Without a doubt, the Ferrari LaFerrari is a magnificent machine packed with cutting-edge technology but ruthlessly exploits all the cards in its hold to intensify the whole driving experience. The very principle that Enzo Ferrari used to construct his best supercars was to offer uncompromised speed and performance for the road use, and Ferrari LaFerrari and Ferrari Enzo both achieve that to the very last letter.

Ferrari F40 was the last flagship supercar to be approved by Enzo Ferrari himself before his demise in 1988. Since then, the Ferrari F50, Ferrari Enzo, and Ferrari LaFerrari have followed and stayed true to his ideals and his soul.

Once Enzo Ferrari was asked which was his favorite car, and he responded: “That which is yet to be built, the car which I have not yet created”. It is doubtful whether he would have wondered the existence of a car like the F50, Enzo, or the LaFerrari. But, if he were alive, he would have considered these cars worthy enough to bear his name.
